PERETO holds policy dialogue on Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Production and Consumption in the Kyrgyz
05-10-2022

Definition of long-term development benchmarks, strategic goals, objectives, and public policy measures are necessary for the Kyrgyz Republic's tourism industry. The tourism industry is using 15% of its capacity, and several international experts estimate that this percentage will increase annually by 4.4% until 2028. Despite the optimistic projection, there will be a 150–250% rise in greenhouse gas emissions, waste production, and energy and water use by 2050. The 2030 Agenda, specifically SDG 12 on sustainable consumption and production patterns, is violated by the current scenario.

The growth of the tourism industry in Kyrgyzstan has been slowed by several issues, including poor access and infrastructure, ineffective marketing, insufficient human resource capability, and a general lack of government support. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), the primary engine of the tourism industry, struggle to remain competitive due to unstable energy and water supplies, a lack of adequate central sewage infrastructure, and difficulties with trash collection. Shifting production and consumption patterns, decoupled economic development, environmental degradation, and the exhaustion of natural resources challenges must address immediately.

Given these difficulties and industries sustainable growth of Kyrgyzstan's tourism and hospitality, the European Union's SWITCH-Asia initiative is helping the country by funding the Promoting Energy Security and Sustainable Growth by Enhancing Energy and Resource Efficiency of Tourism SMEs in Kyrgyzstan project (PERETO).

The PERETO project is holding a workshop discussion with the big players in the tourist sector, including specialists, ministries, banks, international and tourism organizations, and business groups, to examine the prospects and problems of implementing sustainable production and consumption in the Kyrgyz tourism industry.
