Four benefits for roadside hotels and cafes in Batken Oblast from processing organic animal waste: biofertilizer, biogas for cooking, heating and saving

The “Texas” leisure centre is located on the strategic Osh - Isfana highway (Kadamjai district of Batken Oblast, Kyrgyzstan). Entrepreneur Akbarali Zhoroev built a community toilet for motorists at the 175th kilometre of highway in 2002. The business evolved over the years to include a roadside cafe and hotel. The cafe serves up to 400 customers daily and the hotel can accommodate 50 guests.

Additionally, the businessman owns a dairy farm providing complementary dairy products at the cafe and hotel.

In spring 2020, Zhoroev applied to the KyrSEFF funding through the partner bank. His application was approved, and at the end of March 2020, the entrepreneur launched a 50 m3 biogas reactor using credit funds. The biogas system can process more than 3 tons of raw materials (manure with 89-92% moisture content) producing more than 3 tons of biofertilizers per day. This volume is sufficient to fertilize 0.5 hectares of land. In addition, the unit produces 90 m3 of biogas per day which is enough to heat the facility of 300 m2.

His plans to increase the headcount of the cattle, and hence, to increase the production volumes of gas and fertilizers.

Akbarali Zhoroev was awarded an EU grant totaling 15% of the total loan amount for the successful implementation of the project aimed at installing renewable energy technologies and improving energy efficiency of his cafe and hotel.

BENEFIT

According to the entrepreneur, these measures allowed him to stop using natural gas in his cafe and hotel. Additionally, the thermal insulation of the hotel building resulted in a decrease of the hotel average electricity bill from 80,000 to 20,000 KGS per month.
