Converting waste heat from restaurant's kitchen into energy

The restaurant La Trattoria in Midleton, UK (23 staff) used to have a high temperature at the kitchen due to cooking. Previously an extraction fan needed to be running all day to bring the temperature down. At the same time, the restaurant was spending over € 9 000 annually on an oil boiler for hot water supply and ventilation. In order to improve the temperature condition and cut down on expenses, La Trattoria decided to redirect and reuse the heat from the kitchen in a sustainable manner. They installed a heat recovery unit which took the hot extracted air from the kitchen and reused it to heat water. As a result, the family-run restaurant made annual savings around € 6 000 from heat waste generated by ovens, fridges, etc. Additionally, the kitchen staff benefited from more pleasant working conditions.
